Can a wall serve the same purpose as a headboard?

I'd estimate than better than 25% of people do not have a headboard and simply use a frame. There is really no reason for a headboard other than aesthetic unless you're afraid of banging your head while you are "frolicking". My daughter actually painted a headboard on the wall of her house in Vermont and it looks great.
